Liberal councillor Carmelo Pesce will continue as mayor of Sutherland Shire after a lucky draw.
The new deputy mayor is Labor councillor Peter Scaysbrook, reflecting the balance in the new council, which met for the first time on Monday night.
Both positions were decided by a draw after votes were seven all in each case.
Cr Pesce was the Liberal nomination for mayor, while Labor nominated Cr Scaysbrook.
Cr Provan was the Liberal nomination for deputy mayor against Cr Scaysbrook, who was second time lucky when a draw was held.
Labor had only six of its seven councillors present because new member Greg McLean was overseas on a family matter.
Independent Steve Simpson voted with Labor for each position, requiring general manager Scott Phillips to conduct two draws. Cr Pesce and Cr Scaysbrook said they could work together in the interests of the council and ratepayers..
