The shout of ‘Up Up Cronulla’ can be heard as far away at Vietnam this week.
Two Sutherland Shire families have brought the black, white and blue to Hoi An in the hopes their cheers will lead the Sharks to victory in the NRL grand final on Sunday.
Kylie and Ray Petts, previously of North Caringbah, have been living in Hoi An for a year but their love of the Sharks is still as strong as ever.
Mr Petts is flying back to Sydney for the game while Kylie and their children Finn and Riley will cheer on the team from a local sports bar.
'There's no way I could miss Cronulla's biggest game with my mates after 40 years of waiting to see them take the premiership," he said.
"The flights cost a lot but it's worth every cent to see the Sharks in the grand final."
Family friend Evie Farrell said she along with her daughter Emmie, 6, will join the family in supporting the team from afar.
They are in Hoi An for a month before travelling to the Phillipnes.
'We'd love to be at home for the atmosphere and excitement - the Shire community pulls together like no other and it all looks so incredible," she said.
"But the next best thing is being with our friends and watching the game live on Sunday - and we'll be cheering all the way from Vietnam."
Mrs Petts said the kids have been getting a lot of attention with their Sharks flags, shirts and caps.
"When the locals see the children with their flags and caps they ask them 'What team? What team?'’ she said.
‘’The kids tell them Cronulla is the best team in the comp.
"We're spreading the word and our neighbours are now greeting them each day with 'Up up'!
"I'd say Hoi An is right behind Cronulla for the win."
She said there will be a big celebration if the Sharks take out the title.
‘’The kids want to do laps on their push bikes with their flags and watch the celebrations online,’’ she said.
‘’The kids will wear their Cronulla gear to school. We're hoping school will play Up Up over the load speaker at assembly.’’
The Petts family is returning to Caringbah North in October where Kylie will relocate her family photography business, Wonderlight Photography.
