Plans for major traffic changes at Blakehurst, which led to protests from several hundred residents, have been scrapped.
The proposed changes included banning south bound traffic on Princes Highway turning right into King Georges Road during morning and afternoon peak periods.
Residents said this would force drivers to turn right into Terry Street, which already has high traffic volume or, alternatively, continue on tp the loop road under Tom Uglys Bridge.
Accessing Baldface would have become a nightmare.
Roads and Maritime Services (RMS) released the plans as part of the $300 million “Gateway to the South” pinch point program, in December last year, giving residents only a couple of weeks to comment.
Community anger led to the deadline being extended until the end of January.
A report on the community consultation, released this month, said RMS had decided “not to proceed with this proposal at this stage” and other options would be examined.
The report said there was significant congestion at the intersection of Princes Highway and King Georges Road.
“Improvements to the intersection are needed to reduce congestion and improve travel speeds and reliability,” the report said.
“We will be carrying out field investigation and design work to develop alternative solutions to help ease congestion at this intersection.
“We will continue to work closely and engage with the community during the development of these alternative solutions.”
The report said comments were received from 351 people and organisations.
A petition with 462 signatures, from Oatley MP Mark Coure, had also been submitted.
Of the 351 individual responses, 292 had opposed the proposal.
Traffic changes will occur in the next few weeks while further investigations are carried out on King Georges Road between Phillip Street and Princes Highway, and on the Princes Highway between Miowera Avenue and Hatfield Street.
The work will be carried out at night and, at times during the days before November 18.
