A newspaper clipping shows some things haven’t changed since the Sharks battled Manly in the 1978 grand final.
“Sharks dress up for the kill” was the headline above a report on the “Shark fever” that had hit rugby league “from Menai to Cronulla, from Helensburgh to Oyster Bay”.
The report, which surfaced on Facebook this week, said the Sharks were greeted by “a huge crowd” at their last public appearance at a function organised by then Sutherland Shire president (mayor) Michael Tynan at his motor vehicle dealership on Princes Highway.
The report said the council was already planning a civic reception.
“Support has grown out of all proportion and that’s understandable – they’re a top team of blokes,” Mr Tynan said.
Mr Tynan died early this year, but his family’s shire dealerships are just as enthusiastic in their support for the Sharks.
They have erected big banners, balloons and a flashing sign, while the Sharks song is played to customers on hold.
