Miranda police still do not know what happened to Cassie Olczak after she was found walking on the Princes Highway at Waterfall this morning.
Just before 9am today a motorist sighted someone matching the girl’s description on the Princes Highway and phoned emergency services.
Sutherland police spoke to the girl who confirmed she was the missing teenager.
She has since been taken to hospital for treatment after being exposed to the elements for the last five days.
Miranda Acting Superintendent Gary Ford said she it’s believed Cassie had been in bush land since she disappeared.
He said police would know more once the teenager had been treated. However her mother Connie said Cassie had said she bumped her head.
‘’She has been in the bush from what we understand and from what she’s said not that far from the train station,’’ he said.
‘’She’s in the care of medical staff at the moment so we don’t want to pressure her yet. We’ll talk to her in the next 24 hours once she’s recovered.’’
He confirmed she had been found close to where she was last seen.
‘’There was initially a call received for a possible sighting on the Princes Highway at Waterfall this morning. and we had crews in the area at the time,’’ he said.
‘’Then she was sighted by rail staff at Waterfall station and we were able to meet with her there.’’
He said she had been alone and was in relatively good health.
Hundreds of people have helped in the search including more than 90 on Thursday alone.
Her mother Connie Olczak said she had briefly seen her daughter before she was taken to hospital.
‘’I just wanted to get to her and look after her,’’’ she said.
‘’I want to thank the SES, the police detectives, the media that put the coverage out. It’s just a miracle and I don’t even know what to say.
‘’I’m just grateful that she’s been found.’’
She said she couldn’t describe the moment she first saw her daughter again.
‘’It was the most amazing feeling in the world, I can’t describe it,’’ she said.
‘’I felt like I was living in a movie and I just had to look at her and think oh my god it’s actually her.’’
She thanked the community but now asked for privacy.
‘’I just want her to get the medical treatment she needs and then we’ll go from there,’’ she said.
