Aspiring film-makers and photographers with a passion for nature are being invited to take part in a venture to help gain world heritage listing for Royal National Park.
Everything has a beginning, and the Royal was at the very beginning of the national park movement.

Sutherland Shire Environment Centre has engaged a creative agency to produce a “community-driven” film, which will celebrate the cultural, environmental and historical significance of the park and Royal Reserves, Garawarra State Conservation Area and Heathcote National Park.
The film will have a public screening in April, and will also be distributed online and in other ways throughout the community.
An environment centre statement, issued by chairworman Jenni Gormley, said, while contributing to a historic campaign, participants would also take part in a free film-making training program run by the agency, Digital Storytellers.
The statement said Royal National Park was significant as the first formally declared national park for the purpose of protecting a natural area.
”[This declaration] signalled the beginning of a whole new phase in public life, nationally and internationally – the invention of national parks, which now cover 17 per cent of the Earth's terrestrial surface.
“Everything has a beginning, and Royal was at the very beginning of this movement.
“At present there are no places on the World Heritage List that recognise this incredible innovation.
“It’s time we fixed that by sharing the story with the world… and we are asking you to help”
This project is open to ages from 14 upwards.

Two workshops will be held:
- Find & Make: Saturday March 11, 9:30am – 4:30pm.
- Make & Edit: Saturday March 18, 9:30am – 4.30pm.
Both workshops will be held at the park’s environmental education centre, 159 Farnell Avenue.
“If you have access to some sort of filming device that you would like to learn to use more effectively for filming, please bring it along (even smartphone is fine),” the statement said.
“Digital Storytellers will provide gear we will use for shooting.”
