UPDATE:
Fairfax Media have reported that talks to bring Sutherland Sharks junior Tom Glover back to Australia with the Newcastle Jets have broken down.
Glover had been sounded out as an injury replacement for Jets goalkeeper Ben Kennedy, who is out for the season with a ruptured Achilles tendon.
The Newcastle Herald reported that agent Joel Grenell, who was representing Glover in talks with the Jets, said the teenager was keen for the move but his English Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur had blocked it.
“Tottenham do not believe he is ready to go out on loan at this stage,” Grennel said.
“He is training every day with their Premier League keepers and they want to continue to develop him at the club.”
ORIGINAL STORY:
A-League club Newcastle are considering an approach to former Sutherland Sharks goalkeeper Tom Glover.
The 18-year-old is being chased as a replacement for Jets No.1 Ben Kennedy who is out for the season with a ruptured Achilles tendon.
Glover began training with English Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur as a 14-year-old and joined the club’s academy full time in August, 2014.
Jets coach Mark Jones told Fairfax Media last week that Glover, a Young Socceroos representative, was “well and truly in the frame’’ – though former Jets keeper Ante Covic is also being considered.
To sign Glover, the Jets would need to negotiate a release or possibly a loan deal with Spurs.
“I think he’s third or fourth-string keeper over there, because the standard is amazing,’’ Jones said.
“But if he was to come out here, he gets to showcase himself in the A-League.
“He knows that we’re interested, and he’s interested as well.
“If we could get him on loan, it would in their [Tottenham’s] interests as well, I would imagine.’’
Another Sutherland product, Jack Duncan, has deputised for Kennedy since returning to the A-League after leaving Danish side Randers FC and kept a clean sheet in Newcastle’s 4-0 thrashing of Brisbane on Sunday.
