The annual national Garage Sale Trail takes place on Saturday, October 22, with 115 sales registered for Sutherland Shire by early this week and the number growing each day.
Environment Minister and Cronulla MP Mark Speakman encouraged residents to “get out and grab a bargain”.
Launching the event in the shire, Mr Speakman said the award-winning community initiative promoted sustainability and recycling.
“The Garage Sale Trail helps the environment by encouraging re-use of items that might otherwise be thrown out,” he said.
“It’s also a great opportunity for people to get out and meet their neighbours.
“I’m particularly pleased to note Sutherland Shire was in the top three local government areas to participate in the Trail last year, and this year looks like being even bigger.”
The NSW Environment Protection Authority contributes $100,000 each year to the event through the NSW Government’s Waste Less, Recycle More program.
Now in its sixth year, the Garage Sale Trail encourages people to clean out their homes and sell unwanted items instead of sending them to the tip.
As the saying goes, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure.
- Cronulla resident Meili Bookluck
Cronulla resident Meili Bookluck, who participated in the shire launch, has registered for the first time, and her sale will take place at 39 Seaview Street, Cronulla,
Ms Bookluck has a regular stall, called Crazy Maizys, at Caringbah Markets.
”Friends give me stuff, I pick things up, I find a deal,” she said.
“I think the Garage Sale Trail is a fantastic idea, and should be held more often – maybe three times a year.
“I hate to see good things going to the tip.
“I like to see them re-used three to four times and the smile on the faces of people when they get a great bargain.
“As the saying goes, one person’s trash is another person’s treasure.”
Ms Bookluck said she had more than 100 items for sale, “from designer glasses, watches and dresses to used clothes for just a dollar”.
“We have heaps of surfboards and some sporting memorabilia, including a framed autographed photo of Anthony Mundine,” she said.
Garage Sale Trail founder Darryl Nichols, who also attended the shire launch, said this year’s national campaign was bigger than ever, with 15,000 sales expected.
