Primrose House at Dolls Point is up for sale despite strong community opposition.
In August last year, South Eastern Sydney Local Health announced it was considering a proposal to sell the site.
St George Hospital bought the property in 1936 where it remained a hospital until 1991 when South East Area Health Services moved in.
Director of capital works and redesign, Cath Whitehurst, said last year that the property no longer met their requirements.
It was confirmed to be sold earlier this year.
Recently a for sale for tender sign was erected on the site with Savills the agent behind the sale.
It was erected a week after a decision was handed down by the NSW Heritage Council’s state heritage register committee to not progress the nomination for state heritage listing.
The 6,000sqm block is zoned R2 Low Density Residential with the rest of the property zoned RE1 Public Recreation.
Tenders for the site close on November 3.
Questions to Savills were redirected to Property NSW who said they could not comment on the expected price or level of interest while the tender process was underway.
One group not expected to be in the running will be Bayside Council despite former Rockdale Mayor Bill Saravinovski vowing to fight to save the house earlier this year.
‘’This is more than just a landmark. It was a hospital for our ANZAC heroes,’’ he said at the time.
‘’I will do all I can to save this building from the wrecking ball and make sure it remains in public hands.’’
At the first meeting of the Bayside Council local representation committee meeting on October 5 Mr Saravinovski questioned whether money from the Stronger Communities Fund given as part of the amalgamation could be used for property acquisitions, such as Primrose House.
However a Bayside Council spokesman said that under the fund there was a requirement to ensure the community was consulted and given the opportunity to put forward ideas.
‘’Bayside Council is currently in the process of establishing a Stronger Communities Fund Assessment Panel with the responsibility to assess projects and make recommendations to council for this type of funding,’’ he said.
