Students from Cronulla Public School will be turning out in force for the Shire Mile Run, one of the many events taking place at Cronulla as part of the International Beach Festival, being hosted by surfer Sally Fitzgibbons.
“When we heard about the event we were very keen to be a part of it, especially as it is being held in our backyard,” Cronulla Public School Sport Teacher Elliott McKimm said.
“At Cronulla Public School we value the importance of exercise and healthy eating. We acknowledge the direct link between daily movement for children and lower obesity rates and improved academic results.”
As well as leading K-2 students through fundamental movement skills lessons and 3-6 students through the sports education model, McKimm established a running club for students before school.“The club meets on Tuesday mornings and we average between 35-50 students,” McKimm said.
Students have competed in the Sutherland to Surf and have dominated the local Park Run, and are looking forward to their next challenge – the Shire Mile Run.
The involvement of the school kids in the Shire Mile Run is the perfect fit, as the run supports the Sally Fitzgibbons Foundation, established to inspire the next generation of Aussie kids to live active and healthy lives. The Foundation provides education material, plus fun and inclusive exercise programs for five to 12-year-old children.
