Night markets are coming back to Sutherland this summer.
Peace Park, next to the Sutherland Entertainment Centre will be the venue for four night markets to be held in November, December, January and February.
Sutherland Shire Council called from expressions of interests last August for an external provider to run the night markets in Peace Park this summer with the option of a further two summer seasons.
But council received no submissions.
Six organisations expressed initial interest but did not follow through with a submission.
One company Specialty Markets said they did not follow through because of complexity of the development consent process but were still interested in future market opportunities.
The council has decided to continue negotiations with Specialty Markets Australia Pty Ltd to conduct the night markets.
The first Sutherland Shire night market was conducted as a trial in Peace Park last November as part of the council’s Light Up the Shire initiative and attracted more than 4000 people and had 20 stalls selling food, clothing, gifts and jewellery.
Because of its success the council held another two markets in January and February.
Public participation was above expectation and feedback from stallholders, members of the public and local businesses was all positive and supportive of the markets continuing.
