Kogarah mayor Nick Varvaris has been endorsed as the Liberal Party’s candidate for the seat of Barton at the federal election.
An accountant, who lives in Blakehurst and is married with two children, Mr Varvaris is president of the party’s Kogarah Bay branch.
He has been a Kogarah councillor since 1999 and has twice served as mayor.
The party said his experience in local government and community groups stood him in good stead for a tilt at the federal seat, which is held by Labor’s Robert McClelland.
Mr McClelland recently rejected speculation he would not stand again.
