One quarter of all adults suffer from sleeping issues that could be caused by multiple reasons including allergies or discomfort.
While some people have struggled to find a solution, they may have not considered one of the most simplest options – changing the pillow case.
Health and medical experts have said pure silk pillow cases can provide a number of health and beauty benefits. Here’s why silk pillow cases have become the new bedroom essential:
Body
Silk is a natural temperature regulator and has the ability to make you feel warmer during cooler months and cooler in summer, but it is also a good option for allergy sufferers.
Silk is dust mite resistant and hypoallergenic.
Hair
While cotton is a more common fabric used for bedding, a cotton pillow case could draw moisture from hair and can damage hair follicles, causing thinner and dryer hair.
Silk pillow cases are gentler on hair and can help to prevent tangles, knots and may even help to preserve a fresh blow dry.
Skin
Skin is the biggest organ in the human body and should be cared for, but cotton pillow cases could cause wrinkles, creases and skin dehydration because of the highly absorbent fabric.
Dermatologists have recommended pure silk pillow cases because skin glides onto the surface, perfect for sensitive skin and even for those who suffer from acne.
“Persistently pressing our faces into a pillow case causes trauma to the skin. Over time, this trauma, aggravated by the friction of a cotton pillow case, can create permanent creases as our collagen breaks down,” World renowned dermatologist, Dr Dennis Gross said.
However, not all ‘silk’ pillow cases will provide these benefits.
Consumers are urged to check that products don’t contain toxic dyes, false claims of momme (the weight of the silk) and to avoid silk products without a charmeuse finish.
An example of a brand that sells quality silk pillows cases is Slip pure silk pillow case. Slip products are made from pure mulberry silk with a thickness of 22 momme.
Fiona Stewart, Founder of Slip products said she started her company after experiencing her own beauty and health problems.
“Over 10 years ago my dermatologist put me on an acne treatment and I was suffering from bad side effects like hair thinning and dehyrdrated skin. He recommended me to stay hydrated and to also find a silk pillow case to help my sensitive skin, but I couldn’t find one. I realised there was a market for it and it was something that all women should know about,” Fiona Stewart said.
Slip pure silk pillow case also makes sleep masks.
