More than 1100 competitors hit Cronulla Beach last weekend for Cronulla Surf Lifesaving Club’s annual short course carnival.
Athletes representing 19 clubs from Port Macquarie in the north to Warilla in the south took part with Newport’s Max Brooks winning the feature Vici 2km Shark Island Ski Race in an impressive 50-competitor field.
Wanda’s Danielle McMahon won the women’s division.
Brooks and North Bondi’s Lizzie Welborn won their respective open ironman and ironwoman races.
Cronulla showed their depth on the beach winning both the male and female all age beach relays with the races involving 10 competitors from each club in each race ranging from under-9s to open age.
The most exciting race of the day was the final event where McMahon came from behind to run down Cronulla’s injured Carla Papac on the finish line to win the open women’s taplin relay.
North Cronulla won the men’s division with an impressive display.
More than 130 under-8s competitors enjoyed their first day of inter-club competition as they raced in individual beach sprint, flags, wading race and relays.
Cronulla club president Rob Short was delighted with the day with exciting surf sport complemented by a festival atmosphere on the beach and in the park.
After dominating the beach results Cronulla had a late surge to overtake friendly Bate Bay rivals Wanda SLSC to narrowly win the Frank Doran Financial Services Perpetual Trophy. Elouera was third.
