UPDATE
Cronulla MP and Environment Minister Mark Speakman has denied a jail could be built at Kurnell.
“A TV station ran a news story last night suggesting that Kurnell was under consideration for a new jail,” Mr Speakman told the Leader.
”The suggestion is unfounded.
“The Corrections Minister has ruled out categorically any suggestion of a jail at Kurnell.”
MONDAY STORY
Kurnell has been named as one of three sites being considered to house a replacement for Long Bay Jail.
Nine News said the sites were being “scouted” by Corrective Services Minister David Elliott.
Political reporter Chris O’Keefe said the other two areas being looked at were South Campbelltown and Badgerys Creek.
The speculation came after Mr Elliott ruled out Wollondilly as a location after strong opposition from the local community.
The state government has for a long time made it clear it would like to sell the Long Bay Jail site at Malabar, which would be a prime housing development area.
