Anti-throw protection screens are among finishing touches to be applied to the new Lily Street bridge over the rail line at Allawah.
The $16.5 million project was officially opened by Oatley MP Mark Coure on Wednesday more than a week after it was opened to traffic on November 29.
“This is a great result for the local community and businesses in the area,” Mr Coure said.
“The NSW Government, Sydney Trains and Roads and Maritime Services have listened to the community and delivered.”
Mr Coure said the pedestrian footpath on the western side of the bridge would be completed in coming weeks.
The installation of anti-throw protection screens would be completed in January, he said.
The bridge has four lanes compared with two on the previous structure, but the configuration is unusual.
There is only one northbound lane and three southbound lanes, including a left-turn lane, right-turn lane and another for through traffic.
The design was based on traffic studies by the former Hurstville Council and had the support of the former Kogarah Council.
The studies found the majority of congestion was created by south-bound traffic.
