As the City of Hurstville becomes increasingly built up, you would be forgiven for not noticing the little Baptist Church and small residence on Queens Road and Dora Street.
They are resolutely the last non-council buildings on the block - or near enough.
For the past eight years or so, Hurstville Council (now Georges River Council) has used every weapon in their arsenal to remove the church.
They have stopped the church from upgrading and developing at every turn, even slapping on a heritage order (since overturned) despite leaking plans of their own to demolish the lot!
They have offered a token ’land swap’, a smaller piece of land, then demanded millions for the deal to go ahead, which the church could not afford.
Their Christmas gift this year - to compulsorily and forcibly acquire the site.
The church had plans for a redeveloped site that would include community services like Playtime and Music groups for young children, English conversation classes, counselling services and more throughout the week.
Instead, after 80 years in Hurstville they are looking at almost certainly being displaced and the State Government is approving it!
What could be the last ever Carols Night at HBC will be held 5:30pm Tuesday, December 20 as a celebration of Christmas and to honour 80 years of community service.
