The new Georges River Council will celebrate Australia Day with a free festival at Carss Bush Park.
Prior to the merger of the former Hurstville and Kogarah Councils in May, each council had separate Australia Day celebrations.
Hurstville Council used Oatley Park and Kogarah Council used Carss Bush Park for Australia Day.
Georges River Council Administrator John Rayner said the festival is set to be a great day out for the whole family.
“The event will begin at 10am, where we will welcome 100 new Australian citizens at a citizenship ceremony,” he said.
“Following the ceremony, the festival will commence with a range of entertainment, including live music, market stalls, food and performances set to thrill festival goers of all ages.
“Children will be entertained with live entertainment including The Snoopy Show and Hoot and Hootabelle, as well as 7D interactive mobile cinema and Carss Park Cottage Museum tours.
“The festival will conclude at 9pm with a spectacular fireworks display over Kogarah Bay.”
Other entertainment will include cultural performances, roving entertainers and children's acts Curious George and Tree Fu Tom, as well as bands The Party Agents and Matchbox Rock and Roll Band.
Mr Rayner said Australia Day is all about people coming together to reflect and be proud of our nation’s great heritage, sense of community spirit and cultural diversity.
“For over 25 years this event has showcased great live music, diverse cultural performances, amusing roving entertainers and market stallholders selling clothing, crafts and foods from around the world,” he said.
During the event there will be some road closures including the corner of Allawah Avenue and Carlton Crescent which is resident only access and the corner of Carwar Avenue and Carlton Crescent.
Parking is available on Carss Park Flats via Carlton Crescent and Todd Park for a gold coin donation. All proceeds will go to the Kogarah State Emergency Service.
