Sad circumstances surround an apparent derelict caravan, which has been parked alongside a social housing unit in Caringbah for several months.
The vehicle has no wheels and sits on stacked up tyres next to the balcony of the Banksia Avenue unit.
A Caringbah South resident, who contacted the Leader, said the “derelict” van was “an eyesore and a total embarrassment”.
“A number of community members (me included) have lodged complaints with Housing NSW Miranda over an extended period of time,” he wrote.
The resident also contacted Cronulla MP and Attorney-General Mark Speakman.
Mr Speakman’s office received the following explanation from Housing NSW Miranda:
“The Housing NSW tenant intended to repair the caravan so that he could travel,” the advice said.
“Before he could complete the project, he fell sick and was hospitalised.
“The tenant is terminally ill and only has a few months to live.
“The tenant is in respite care and arranged for his friend to remove the van.
“The friend did not remove the caravan and is now no longer able to assist.
“FACS (Family and Community Services) contacted the tenant’s sister and she has agreed to arrange removal.
“The tenant does not have the financial capacity to pay for the removal.
“CSO has asked for written permission from the tenant to relinquish ownership of the van so that the caravan can be removed.
“Written permission is being pursued and the caravan is being removed in the coming days.”
