Re the article ‘‘Plastic bags top river litter’’ (Leader, January 25).
We recently moved to the shire and overall find it a great lifestyle. But the council’s attitude to litter is appalling.
Few of the parks and reserves have sufficient (or any) bins. We have noticed that the same rubbish is in the same parks for months so it seems that no regular cleaning maintenance is provided.
This is same rubbish that is eventually washed down into the Hacking River by rainwater.
My family normally pick up the litter we see when we walk but if there are no council bins we need to take it home and this is not an option with rotting or smelly garbage.
Come on Sutho Council - make an effort to deal with rubbish before it ends up in the river.
Antonia Hayler, Gymea Bay
I don’t think banning plastic bag use for everyone on account of the thoughtless few is a reasonable approach.
Damo Stewart
Yeap, I’ve been picking up rubbish which somehow always manage to accumulate around our water area specially after Christmas and New Year.
Sukesih Guna
What about those plastic bait bags. The fisho’s (probably not locals) just leave them when they are done, the wind picks up and they end up in the drink not the bin.
Jason Lammers
Why do people think our beaches, parks and waterways are garbage dumps ? Do they live like this in their own homes? If no bins are available take your rubbish with you.
David Arthur Slim
The bags aren’t the problem it’s the people who leave them.
I use plastic bags responsibly and don’t leave them as litter.
When we have a problem, it’s a knee jerk reaction to ban or legislate against it. Nanny state. How would it be if one kid in a school has nits so every kid gets their head shaved..no, its the responsibility of the individual. Educate not legislate.
Every one could pick up bags and rubbish to leave the area a better place.
Diane Porter
Go for a walk or ride through Cook Park at Dolls Point after the weekend to see where all this rubbish comes from. People are disgusting.
Chris Jones
Too many disposables and plastic junk being sold everywhere already!
Too many people too lazy and thoughtless to do the right thing! Clean Up Australia is everyday!
Margaret Mary Bennett
Bring it in full and heavy, take it away empty and light. No excuse for litter. We need to ban the plastic bags, and bring in deposits on bottles as returnables.
Shirley Naylor
I imagine it’s the same around the Cronulla parks after a weekend as well

Call to save wooden jetty
Re the article ‘‘Save Scylla Bay wharf plea’’ (Leader, January 25).
The ramp, particularly the pylons, have had it, and a new ramp and pontoon will be far superior for all.
There is so much silt on the bay you can walk out at low tide. It needs to be dredged.
However, I would be more concerned about the pollution from years and years of boat cleaning at Como marina.
Jason Dullow
A plastic pontoon to replace an old beautiful jetty?
How about a beautiful new wooden jetty. Plastic pontoon how ugly.
Janelle GV
Save the jetty. My husband proposed to me on this jetty.
Kimberly Jane
Demolish it, move into the future.
Jared Macquart
Has been there all my life.
Repair and save!
