UPDATE: The search has been called off at 2.30pm after no sign was found of a swimmer or diver in distress.
EARLIER: A search is underway off Cronulla after a swimmer or diver was reported to be in distress.
Witnesses reported what appeared to be a swimmer or a diver in distress off the rockpool at Cronulla at 1.30pm this afternoon.
The Westpac Lifesaver helicopter is currently sweeping the coast from the south of Cronulla up to North Cronulla Beach.
Cronulla lifesavers are also on the scene.
The search has been unable to locate anyone, Westpac Lifesaver helicopter ceo Stephen Leahy said.
“We have done an extensive search but can’t see anything either above or below the water,” he said.
“We’ve done several sweeps of the area and the water is fairly clear at the moment.
“There have been no further reports of anyone missing or in distress.”
The search is continuing.
