Fitzmaurice Street was Wagga’s original business and commercial centre with general stores, banks, stock and station agents and the post office lining the street.
One of the original stores was David Copland, a large department store which was sold to David Jones before closing in the late 60s.
Many of the businesses moved to Baylis Street as developments started.
“The nature of the businesses have changed significantly,” historical society member Peter Gissing said.
“As businesses moved out other ones moved in.”

Mr Gissing owned a pharmacy on Fitzmaurice Street before he moved into the Sturt Mall and Marketplace. After leaving the street a menswear hire store moved in and then a Lighting store which is still there today.
Mr Gussing eventually sold his pharmacies to the Blooms group which are still trading today.
Along the street today is a mix of businesses with a strong restaurant and cafe scene emerging.
“I no longer have a business interest there but it’s terrific to see (the street thriving),” Mr Gissing said.
The Historical Society hopes to see the heritage sites on the street recognised and appreciated more.
“Some of the original buildings are gone but some are still there and have a new purpose which is great but we want to do a better job of showing off the heritage of the area.”
It's terrific to see the street busy but I think it would be good to see more appreciation for some of the heritage sites in the area
