Awards continue to come for the Washington Park urban renewal project in Riverwood, which combines social and private housing.
The latest award was a commendation in the inaugural awards given by the Greater Sydney Commission.
Judges said the project was a model for delivery of housing mix within an urban renewal site.
In 2016, Washington Park was named Best Masterplanned Community Development in the Urban Taskforce Development Awards, adding to previous honours from the Urban Development Institute of Australia (NSW).
Washington Park is a public-private partnership between property development and investment company Payce and the state government’s Land and Housing Corporation.
It is the first stage of a proposed redevelopment of the huge estate, which housed a US military hospital during World War 11 and then became the Herne Bay housing settlement and, later, more modern social housing.
Washington Park includes 150 social apartments, 675 private apartments, community centre, public library and three shops.
It is estimated development of the remainder of the estate, north of Riverwood station, will provide another 1600 new social and affordable homes and more than 3500 homes for private buyers.
Planning Minister Anthony Roberts and chief commissioner of the Greater Sydney Commission Lucy Turnbull presented the Greater Sydney Planning Awards on Thursday, February 23.
Ms Turnbull said the awards “celebrate innovative, bold city making projects”.
Washington Park was one of five projects commended in the Great Integrated Planning Project category. There were six award categories.
The judges said Washington Park also “demonstrated the significance of well-considered community initiatives”.
“A community renewal plan supports the masterplan, which through a range of initiatives, encourages residents to be connected, get involved and have a say in future endeavours for the long term benefit of everyone who lives and will live at Washington Park,” the commendation said.
The winner of this category was the Westmead Hospital health, education and research precinct.
