They are the quartet of young guns that St George Illawarra fans will hope can spark the Dragons in 2017 – and the club can build around to ensure success in the future.
St George local juniors Jacob Host (Renown United), Matt Dufty (Penshurst RSL), Luciano Leilua (Hurstville United) and electric halfback Jai Field are all battling to be in coach Paul McGregor’s plans this season.
Host, 20, re-signed with the club until at least the end of the 2020 season having made his first grade debut in 2016, going on to play eight first grade games in the Red V.
It was a dream come true for the boyhood Dragons fans, who sees a bright future ahead for the club.
“There’s a lot of exciting times ahead with all the young fellas coming through. I think 2017 will be a big year for the club. I reckon we have the roster that’s capable of doing big things this year and I’m sure we won’t disappoint,” Host said.
“The goal for me personally is to cement a spot in the 17 and to be playing consistent football every week. If I can do that and put my best foot forward going into the future that’s my goal for this year. If I can do that I’ll be really happy.”
The powerful back-rower, a former Junior Kangaroo, is also keen to run out at his home ground, UOW Jubilee Oval, Kogarah, against Penrith in round one.
“[I love playing at Kogarah] more than anything. It’s my favourite field in the world. I’m sure it will be packed out. The Dragons faithful always get out to Kogarah and are waving their banners, you’ve got all the fans on the hill and in the stands. I’m sure it’ll be a great occasion,” he said.
“I’ll probably have the whole family there. My dad’s side of the family are all Dragons fans so I know they’ll probably be there.
“[Round one is] pretty much what I’ve been working for all pre-season. I’ve worked the hardest I’ve ever worked in my life. For round one to be so close now it’s a very exciting time.”
Field is in line to play in the halves in round one, while Dufty is expected to miss the first few weeks of the season with a knee injury having impressed at the Auckland Nines.
