Wanda Surf Lifesaving Club finished third at the NSW Surf Lifesaving Open Championships last weekend, leading home a successful event for the Bate Bay clubs.
North Cronulla (fourth), Cronulla (fifth) and Elouera (10th) all secured top ten finishes, with Newport edging out branch rivals Manly to top the overall point score for the fourth consecutive year.
It was three exciting days of competition at Blacksmiths Beach, Newcastle despite the delayed start on Friday due to dangerous surf.
Wanda’s Britney Pierce finished runner-up in the under-19s board while opens athletes were happy to conserve energy in the early rounds on Friday, with the goal to secure positions in Sunday’s finals.
Beach events and team events headlined the Saturday competition, with Cronulla’s Isabellah Walker taking out the under-15s sprint final.
Cronulla’s Chloe Mannix-Power powered her way to her third straight title in the under-17s sprint while Elouera’s Michael Hanna took out the men’s event.
Alex Rampoldi from North Cronulla won the open female flags while clubmate Ngaire Hadfield won the under-19s.
Wanda also finished runner-up in the under-19s female Taplin relay.
With the beach program done for another season it was time for the water athletes to shine on Sunday and they didn’t disappoint, with an exceptional display of racing in what turned out to be the tamest conditions of the championships.
Wanda’s Riley Dixon backed up his success at the junior titles in taking out the under-15s Ironman title, while Elouera’s Jake Evans won the under-17s swim and clubmate Chris King won the under-17s board.

In the open women’s Iron Georgia Miller (Newport) held off a strong field that included silver medallist Naomi Scott (Manly) and bronze medallist Jemma Smith (Umina). Miller backed up her win with gold in the surf and board races.
In the open Ironman Kendrick Louis (Manly) did enough to hold off club mate Jay Furniss and Redhead’s Daniel Collins.
