A major intersection adjoining a new development zone at Caringbah will be upgraded – but there is uncertainty over the timing.
Plans for changes at the intersection of Taren Point Road and Kingsway have been developed by Sutherland Shire council.
The roads meet next to the new medical precinct, being created between Caringbah Centre and Sutherland Hospital, on the southern side of Kingsway.
A bonus building height of six storeys, as well as a more generous floor space ratio, are available for developments combining health facilities and apartments.
Traffic studies in development applications for projects in the precinct say the impact will be reduced because the adjoining intersection will be upgraded.
A council spokesman confirmed the intersection upgrade was planned, with construction due to take place in 2018-19.
However, he said the timing would depend on how many projects went ahead in the medical precinct as the road work would be funded from developer Section 94 contributions.
“Council proposes the installation of a three lane, north- bound approach to the traffic signals in Taren Point Road south of Kingsway and a left turn slip lane from the Kingsway into Taren Point Road south,” he said.
“Both projects require localised road widening.”
The spokesman said construction would start in 2018-19, depending on medical precinct progress.
