San Souci’s Will Torney will play a lead role in The Wizard of Oz musical, put on by one of the oldest schools in Sydney.
The St Andrew’s Cathedral School production will be performed at NIDA’s Parade Theatre in Kensington on Thursday, March 30 to Saturday, April 1.
The Year 12 student, who rated drama as his favourite subject, will play the wizard in the musical and said this was his first lead role in a musical.
“I am very excited about playing the wizard,” he said.
“When I read for the wizard, it felt like a good fit for me.
“I found myself falling into the role, which I very much enjoy; he is the character of the show.
“I don’t sing at all, it’s mainly acting for me, which I prefer. It’s great to be able to act in a musical and in a role that’s nothing like I’ve done before.”
The school stage a big musical every two years, which features 115 students this year.
Will enjoys being creative and wants to pursue performing arts or film after school.
“I’ve done film courses before, but I can’t be as creative with film as I can with theatre.
“I think that’s definitely what I hope to do more of in the future – more theatre with characters like the wizard.”
The magical tale of Dorothy’s adventure to Oz will be supported by a full student orchestra.
