Cars have been targeted in a spate of break-ins spanning the Sutherland Shire on Tuesday night.
Miranda police said 13 cars were broken into between 6pm on Tuesday and 8am on Wednesday.
Streets targeted include Harris Street in Burraneer, Carrington Avenue in Caringbah and Parraweena Road, Gwawley Bay and Kareena Road at Miranda.
Miranda police have voiced their frustration as warnings about unlocked cars continue to go ignored.
Out of the 13 cars damaged, nine were unlocked.
In one case one car had cash, a wallet, credit cards and a laptop stolen.
Miranda Senior Constable Chris Shade said it was disappointing to see so many cars unlocked despite previous warnings.
‘’This offence is opportunistic, so if you leave property in full view and your doors unlocked it is likely to be stolen,’’ he said.
‘’When people have wallets stolen the credit cards are often used to commit fraud, costing millions of dollars plus thousands of police hours for a crime which is largely preventable.’’
Miranda Police have put together a list of tips to avoid having your valuables stolen:
■ Lock up every time;
■ Never leave keys in the ignition;
■ Never leave valuables in your vehicle;
■ Install a high quality alarm;
■ Install an engine immobiliser;
■ Park in a safe, well lit area close to your destination;
■ Never leave luggage unattended;
■ Never leave tools unattended.
