Bayside Council has removed more than 126 tonnes of rubbish that was illegally dumped in Sans Souci and Ramsgate last week.
Despite the big number Bayside Council said it is an improvement on the same time last year when 191 tonnes was collected.
The rubbish was found on island nature strips in Alice, Chuter, Walter, Florence and Alfred Streets.
Bayside Council Administrator Greg Wright said the reduction was attributed to the installation of solar powered surveillance cameras and extra education on clean-up collections.
“Taking a proactive approach has paid off, there was a significant amount less illegally dumped material in these areas,” he said.
“We will be rolling out similar initiatives throughout the Bayside Council local government areas.”
The 65 tonne reduction saves council around $14,750 in disposal, overtime and productivity savings.
Illegal dumpers can face a fine of up to $4000 for individuals and $8000 for a corporation.
Courts can impose fines of up to $1 million.
