Hurstville firefighters are among a 51 member task force deployed to help in the aftermath of Cyclone Debbie.
The Urban Search and Rescue Technicians from Hurstville are part of the Fire & Rescue NSW (FRNSW) team that left for North Queensland on Wednesday.
The task force comprises of 43 FRNSW officers, four NSW Rural Fire Service members and two members each from ACT Fire & Rescue and the ACT SES.
The NSW SES will deploy extra personnel later this week.
They arrived in Proserpine on Wednesday where they will carry out rapid damage assessments of homes and other infrastructure in the community.
The cyclone, downgraded to a category 2 early on Tuesday evening, has left a trail of destruction across north Queensland, with properties damaged and people seriously injured.
Striking the coastline as a category 4, the storm brought winds of up to 260km/h, shaking homes, shattering walls, felling powerlines and leaving more than 45,000 customers without power.
