Alex Brosque believes this Sydney FC squad is the best he has been a part of as the Sky Blues prepare to celebrate the club’s second premiership.
Sydney FC will be presented the A-League’s premier’s plate following their final home match of the season against the Newcastle Jets on Saturday night.
The Sky Blues have dominated the competition this season having sat top of the league from start to finish to see them secure their first premier’s plate since the 2009-10 campaign.
Brosque, Sydney FC’s captain, told the Leader this Sky Blues squad was the best he had seen in his eight seasons with the club.
“For me personally it definitely is [the best],” he said.
“It’s got that good mix. Especially in terms of the work rate and effort of the boys and having the fitness to maintain what we’re doing from the first minute to the last is something that I haven’t been a part of before.
“The depth of the squad we have means boys are always pushing each other and not letting up. The consistency we’ve shown regardless of who we’re playing and where they are on the ladder is most pleasing. We always show up to win and win well and I think it shows.”
The 33-year-old confirmed he had agreed to play on with the club next season after discussions with coach Graham Arnold. While nothing is official at this stage, Brosque said he would sit down with the club in coming weeks to extend his time as a Sky Blue.
Sydney FC, grand final winners in 2006 and 2010, are determined to go on and secure a double celebration with success in the finals series. The Sky Blues also lost the 2015 decider to Melbourne Victory.
Brosque said he was keen to share the success of the premier’s plate with the club's fans on Saturday night.
“It’s definitely up there [as an achievement],” he said.
“The last time the club won it I was part of that squad as well and I think this squad has a similar mix of experienced players as well as young players but it’s hard to argue against the stats.
“The way we’ve dominated the league this year is incredible. Seven years ago it came down to the very last game of the season. This season we’ve had it wrapped up with four weeks to go.

“It’ll be nice to lift the plate in front of our fans. It’s been good to see the boys haven’t taken their foot off the pedal in anyway. We’ve just kept winning which is exactly what we needed to do.”
Kick-off at Allianz Stadium is at 5.35pm.
