The Sutherland Shire Relay for Life is being held on May 6/7 at Wanda Beach’s Don Lucas Reserve, which will attract thousands of people and raise plenty of support for Cancer Council NSW. Co-chairmen Rod Coy and Luke Barbuto share a message ahead of the big event.
Not long now until our Relay for Life at Wanda.
Such a mixture of wonderful memories of Sylvania in those 15 years and the excitement of our new home at the iconic Wanda Beach.
We extend our sincere thanks to the people of Sylvania who welcomed us into their neighbourhood, with the noise and traffic, every year.
Together we raised just on $6 million with every cent going to the NSW Cancer Council, with no middlemen here, just a bunch of local volunteers.
We hope the people of Wanda can join with us and as Sutherland Shire Mayor Carmelo Pesce said: “Make the Sutherland Relay for Life the biggest of the thousands in the world” – (at present no.9) and beat this insidious disease.
While on the Sutherland council, what a support they have been to this community event. There is genuine desire right through the council to make our Relay for Life succeed as an annual event down at Wanda Beach.
They have booked a table at the banquet dinner and, alongside Channel 10 and Nova’s Matt de Groot and Sharkie’s Dane Wheeler, they will be judging the best banquet table with the “beach theme” this year.
Tradies will come to a standstill again as many staff up there trek down to relay as well, as the club continues it’s invaluable partnership.
Our gold sponsors ANSTO, UDesign and Pauls Productions will be onsite and adding to the fun.
Rob down at Dancetime hire is helping us out with the 400-person mess tent, with four restaurants attached.
Genesis Cancer Care have all the trivia questions ready for 11pm Saturday.
Anytime Fitness will again be presenting a medal, thanks to Grants Engraving, to all those who travel the 440m track 94 times to record the marathon distance of 42.12km – don’t rush you have 24 hours.
Enware, Sharkies, Shimano and Kareela Golf Club are on board. And of course all the Rotary clubs will be there, as they have every year, putting on the barbecue and also cooking our free breakfast on Sunday morning.
The Leader has been great and will be onsite looking for your stories. Action Sound will be doing audio while Tri Point will provide the stage.
Coates Hire is also chipping in with some very valuable sponsorship. Please make note of these sponsors, because without them we couldn’t put this massive community event on. And we’d ask you to support them through the year as they really deserve it.
Teams of about 10-15 people of all ages will attempt to have a member on track for the 24 hours.
Some may struggle to wander one lap while others may even run a few laps.
The 24-hour program is jam packed, just have a look.
But don’t miss the opening ceremony, the candlelight or banquet as well as the survivor’s reverse lap at 9.30am Sunday morning.
What a journey we are about to share in just over a week’s time. It will be unforgettable, we promise.
So if you have registered for the Sutherland Relay for Life or if you just want to see what all the fuss is about come down to Don Lucas Reserve at Wanda Beach early on Saturday, May 6.
It may just be the best thing your family ever does. By the way, it’s on no matter what the weather.
