An 11-year-old from Kingsgrove is taking on the dog treat industry with a unique new product.
Marcus is behind DOMUTS which is donuts for dogs.
Mum Thea said he came up with the idea while he was helping with his families donut stall.
‘’Marcus would help us at the stall and there was always a lot of dogs around that he wanted to feed,’’ she said.
‘’When we said no, he went home to come up with a recipe just for dogs.’’
The result is DOMUTS which is made from oats, eggs, wholemeal flour, chicken broth, dog treats and dog safe icing.
They are chicken flavoured but come in varieties including raspberry, peanut butter and carob.
He started selling them at his family's donut stall to save up to buy his own dog, a groodle.
Since then, his profits go to local animal shelters to help other animals.
Mrs Mendes said she was very proud of her son.
‘’I think it’s a good thing for him to do,’’ she said.
‘’That’s just who he is, we’re very proud.’’
The customers are also loving the doggy treats.
‘’They just love it,’’ she said.
‘’They like supporting a kid taking the initiative for a great cause.’’
The treats have proved such a success that he has been approached to sell them in local cafes and pet shops.
He is currently selling them at Pet Care 2000 in Taren Point, Drools dog grooming in Kogarah and the Ramsgate Organic Foodies Market.
He also has a online shop to ship to customers all over Australia.
There are no plans to stop with a mobile dog treat truck the next goal.
