The popular Payce Sutherland 2 Surf event will this year put an emphasis on mental health and suicide prevention.
Wanda Surf Life Saving Club runs the annual event which is being held on Sunday, July 23, with entries now open.
The event attracts thousands of runners and walkers each year to raise money for the club. This year it will also help promote mental health and suicide prevention.
Wesley Mission, which runs the LifeForce program and Lifeline Sydney and Sutherland, has come on board as a charity partner. Organisers hope it will help promote mental health in the community.
“Being a community-based charity we see the importance of partnering with other charities and Wanda SLSC is thrilled that Wesley Mission has agreed to be the 2017 PAYCE S2S major charity partner,” race director Michael Brannock said.
Wesley Mission chief executive Rev Keith Garner said he was delighted to be involved.
“Wesley Mission has been providing a wide range of community and aged-care services to the people of the shire for decades,” Rev Garner said.
“Wesley LifeForce has delivered suicide prevention skills training to almost 40,000 Australians.
“The national program has also established and continues to support 72 suicide prevention community networks across the country believing local people have the best solutions for local problems.
“Wesley Mission’s Lifeline Sydney and Sutherland centres answered 40,253 calls from people in crisis last year.”
