Rockdale’s Regals Musical Society will transport you back to a glitzier time with their production of the ultimate showbiz musical, 42nd Street.
Music. Colour. Gorgeous costumes and lavish sets! They knew how to put on a big night out way back in the 1930s and Regals will take you there during a celebration of Broadway and Times Square.
Based on the classic 1933 film, 42nd Street is the grand dame of backstage musicals.
Director Christie Koppe’s high energy production is brimming with the best local singing and dancing talent.
Starring the charismatic Peter Sharratt as legendary perfectionist Broadway director Julian Marsh and the dazzling Lorna McGee as aspiring young chorus girl Peggy Sawyer.
Sawyer comes to the bright lights of New York City from Allentown, Pennsylvania, armed with her tap shoes and big dreams. Her talent catches the eye of legendary Broadway director Julian Marsh, who gives her a spot as a chorus girl in Pretty Lady, his newest show. However Pretty Lady’s leading lady, Dorothy Brock, the classic Broadway diva, is not pleased with the new girl in the cast.
When Dorothy breaks her ankle during the show’s previews, Pretty Lady looks like it will have to close before it even opens, unless a new girl talented enough to lead the show can be found — someone like Peggy Sawyer! Will Peggy be able to step in and become a star?
On opening night, Marsh wills Peggy onto the stage with the immortal words, ‘‘’You’re going out there a youngster, but you’ve got to come back a star!’’
Peggy’s rise from showgirl to star is the stuff of show business dreams!
Will she get her big break and shine like a star on opening night? Well, it is a musical about a musical after all!
The score is chock-full of Broadway standards, including You’re Getting To Be A Habit With Me, Dames, We’re In the Money, Lullaby of Broadway, Shuffle Off to Buffalo and Forty-Second Street.
The whole cast and production team come to this show with a wealth and range of experience that rivals any professional production.
Peter Sharratt, president of The Regals Musical Society said Regals was in its 77th year of providing entertainment to audiences in Sydney.
“We are delighted to be able to continue the legacy of those members who built the foundations of this wonderful society,” Sharratt said.
‘‘Community theatre around the world never ceases to showcase the abundant talent of its performers and creative teams, and The Regals is no exception.”
Christie Koppe, 42nd Street director, said The Regals were thrilled to present their own version of classic.
“All cast members have worked incredibly hard not only on highly technical dance steps but the ability to maintain stamina throughout rehearsals. There’s so much dancing, maybe you’ll be sweating by proxy in the end, too!”
