The inaugural Sydney Drum & Percussion Show promises to be an electrifying presentation that will be the country’s largest pop-up drum and percussion workshop at the Rosehill Gardens on May 27 and 28.
Aspiring muso’s will have the opportunity to participate in drum circles and other hands-on percussion workshops, see Australia’s leading percussion ensembles, Taikoz and Synergy Percussion, as well as leading student percussion ensembles from The Sydney Conservatorium and combined school’s ensemble, Drumfill.
It’s not often you will see a band of Cajons (box drums) being played at the same time however the Cajon Cats are going to take centre stage at the show on Saturday May 27 at 3pm.
Hailing from different areas all over Sydney, the group of 12 meets weekly in Rockdale to jam some funky grooves on their Cajon box drums.
Local Cronulla drummer Amanda Krivograd from the Cajon Cats who has always dabbled in music and percussion has been playing the cajon for six years.
“It's a simple, basic instrument – anyone can sit on the box and drum out a rhythm. Percussion is one of the oldest forms of music and using the body, hands and feet is all you need to play, ” Amanda said.
“The sound of the cajon differs with the type/thickness of wood in the “tapa” (striking surface) and the theory is that slaves used boxes as musical instruments as they could easily be disguised.”
Led by Byron Mark, the cajoneros perform unique arrangements that fuse Flamenco and African beats together to create a large wall of percussive sounds.
The 2017 Sydney Drum & Percussion Show will provide a hands-on chance to see, hear and play a broad range of the world’s favourite brands. It will also see exhibitors offering great show deals.
If you can hit it, ring it, shake rattle and roll it, it'll be at Rosehill Gardens Grand Pavilion on May 27 and 28.
