CAR GRAVEYARDS
Getting rid of an unwanted car was a simple, inexpensive exercise not so long ago.
Georges River, the Menai area and Kurnell were popular car graveyards.
In 1984, more than 80 car wrecks were removed from Georges River State Recreation Area at Alfords Point.
They were dragged out by the Land Rover Owners Club and the Illawong Bushfire Brigade.
The wrecks had built up over eight years.
It was reported that some were likely to have been stolen, stripped and burnt for insurance fraud, while others may have been dumped because they couldn't pass “rego”.
However, none was on the police list of "wanted" stolen cars or had been involved in crimes.
In a 1994 operation, police dragged about 50 cars from Georges River.
A 1992 photo, captioned, “like something out of a Mad Max movie”, shows the extent of the problem at Quibray Bay, Kurnell.
Caltex agreed to remove the wrecks for Clean Up Australia Day.
