The temporary Bunnings store at Taren Point will open at the end of May without any new measures being taken to assist traffic flow around the site.
The new outlet is located in Parraweena Road near the corner of Taren Point Road, where delays are already common.
Further delays could be caused by east-bound vehicles in Parraweena Road turning right into Bunnings.
Vehicles leaving Bunnings and crossing west-bound lanes while turning right into Parraweena Road could also cause disruption.
A spokesman for Sutherland Shire Council said both these traffic movements would be permitted.
”Council will monitor the situation to determine if any changes are necessary,” he said.
The spokesman said the council was considering options to address the traffic situation at the intersection of Parraweena Road and Taren Point Road.
Traffic lights at he intersection do not have a right-turn arrow for east bound traffic in Parraweena Road.
“Any changes to the traffic flow in this area will require consultation with RMS (Roads and Maritime Services) prior to implementation,” the council spokesman said.
Bunnings does not believe the new store will create any traffic problems.
General manager property Andrew Marks said, as part of the development assessment process, Bunnings commissioned a traffic assessment, which included expected traffic levels from expansion of the Caringbah Homemaker Centre, which is due to start soon.
“Both the RMS and council agreed that traffic generated by the Bunnings redevelopment met council requirements and would have no adverse impact on the local streets and intersections,” he said.
Bunnings would not put a date on the opening of the temporary store, saying it would take place “at the end of May”.
The Caringbah warehouse will close at the same time ahead of redevelopment of the site for a much larger outlet.
A Bunnings spokeswoman said work was expected to commence on the new warehouse in late June and be completed in late 2018.
“The majority of team members from the current store will transfer to the temporary store, with some transferring to nearby stores in Kirrawee and Rockdale,” she said.
Manager of the temporary store, Tanya Blair, said team members were excited.
The new outlet would provide customers convenient access to hardware, tools, paint, garden care and other items, she said.
Ms Blair said sausage sizzles and store demonstrations of products would continue.
