UPDATE: NOON
St George police are still working to identify a man who was hit by a train at Kingsgrove early on Monday morning.
Police believe the man, 25, had been a graffiti vandal after finding several items near the body including spray cans and face coverings.
Police said they were still working to identify the man but it appears he was on his own at the time.
St George Detective Inspector Paul Simpkins said it was reminder to stay off the tracks.
‘’It’s a warning to anyone considering entering the rail corridor that it’s never a good idea,’’ he said.
‘’You’re gambling with your life.’’
He said there had been reported instances of graffiti in the area previously but it hadn’t been an ongoing issue.
EARLIER:
Police believe a man who died after being hit by a train at Kingsgrove overnight had been a graffiti vandal.
Emergency services, who went to Kingsgrove station just after midnight on Monday, found the man dead on the tracks.
St George police established a crime scene, which will be examined by forensic specialists.
“Investigations into the incident are continuing, however initial inquiries suggest the man may have run across the tracks after vandalising a stationary train,” a police spokesman said.
The train that hit the man was heading south towards Macarthur.
It stopped immediately and passengers were forced to stay on the train for about an hour until being transferred to buses.
A report will be prepared for the Coroner.
