St George police believe the death of a tradesman at Carlton in February could be linked to the illegal installation of satellite boxes and dishes.
Emergency services were called to the house near the corner of Short Street and Bent Street just before 3pm on Tuesday, February 21, after reports the man, 25, had been electrocuted.
It’s believed the man had been working in the roof of the home at the time.
Paramedics tried to revive the man but he later died.
St George police established Strike Force Hetherington to investigate the death and whether it is linked to faulty wiring previously installed to illegally access subscriber television channels.
It is believed a previous occupant may have requested the installation.
The investigation will also look at whether there is a syndicate providing cheap, unlicensed electrical wiring services to clients including providing clients with unmetered access to the electrical grid.
St George Inspector Paul Simpkins said there were concerns a number of houses throughout Sydney were serviced by the syndicate and may contain dangerous wiring.
“Regardless of the reason, using an unlicensed electrician is extremely dangerous,’’ he said.
“The type of wiring we believe is being installed is particularly dangerous and could result in serious injury or death to any person who comes into contact with it.’’
Police are seeking public help in identify homes which may have similar faulty wiring.
Anyone who may have information on incidents similar to this should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
