A Sutherland Shire dance crew – who last year made the final of Australia’s Got Talent – is off to the US to compete in the World of Dance Finals.
Phly Crew (pronounced fly crew) earned the right to compete at the 2017 World of Dance Finals in California, on July 22, after winning a qualifier in Melbourne recently.
Phly Crew member James Barry said they could not wait to compete on the world stage.
“To win would be ridiculous – it would be crazy amazing.
“But I think the goal for us is to bring something really different. There is a lot of contemporary techniques in our routine and a very strong message.”
Barry will tell you his group is best known for their comedic dance routines, but they have branched out for this competition with a serious message.
“The best way to explain us would be if Monty Python had a dance group,” he said.
“But this [routine] is inspired by life events and the music of Mumford and Sons. And it goes along with trying to show that message that it’s okay to talk about depression and anxiety.”
He said the World of Dance Finals would most likely be dominated by urban hip hop groups, so they would certainly bring something different to the competition with their contemporary-fusion style of dance.
Phly Crew will take seven of its dancers to the US – six of which live in the shire.
The crew have paid for travel costs but are still raising money for further costs when in the US.
You can support them through their Go Fund Me page or go along to their next show on Thursday, June 29 at 7.30pm at The Juniors Kinsford.
Phly Crew started with founding members Barry (Cronulla) and Neale Whittaker (Sylvania Waters) in 2009 and have grown since.
