The St George Football Association’s special needs program is stronger than ever, expanding to four teams this season.
The St George Warriors were established by Carss Park Football Club to acknowledge the passing of former president Darryl Hancock in 2014. His vision was to offer a football program catering for male and female players with development disabilities aged 5 to adult years.
The Warriors are up from two teams in 2015 and three teams last season, with the players invited to form a guard of honour at Sydney FC’s home clash against Melbourne City in April.
The St George club will be joined by the Sutherland Titans to play at the Football NSW Football 4 All gala day at Valentine Sports Park, Glenwood on Sunday. The St George and shire clubs will join 20 other teams for the ninth playing of the tournament.
Penny Hancock, from Carss Park FC, said her husband’s legacy had continued to thrive and grow since the Warriors’ inception.
“Obviously [it has] filled a community demand and is run in conjunction with Carss Park FC and the SGFA. This has hit a nerve on and off the field and been embraced by all with additional volunteers regularly coming along to support the program,” she said.
The club has also overseen the successful integration of a Warriors player into a mainstream All Age team at Carss Park this season. The work of the Warriors has been continually supported by patrons Teresa Polias (Sydney FC W-League captain, former Matilda, Carss Park junior) and Greg O’Rourke (Head of A-League).
Warriors games are played at Parkside Drive, Carss Park.
