Dog clubs upset at the construction of a cycle path in Lower Gannons Park will be given space in a new amenities building to be built in the park.
Works will soon commence to improve the amenities in Lower Gannons Park at Peakhurst Heights and at Oatley Park.
Georges River Council administrator John Rayner said building company Sullivans Construction had been appointed to undertake the works commencing at the end of this month.
“Over $360,000 has been allocated to the works, which will be funded through the Georges River Council 2016-2017 Infrastructure Plus buildings budget,” Mr Rayner said.
“The works will see vast improvements to the amenities located near the castle in Oatley Park.
The works at Lower Gannons Park will consider the needs of dog owners who were angry about plans by Georges River Council for a $1.5 million cycle path in the park which they feared would will cause clashes between dogs and bike riders.
Dog owners said the cycle path which goes in a loop around the edge of the park would lead to a 40 per cent reduction in the dog off-lead area.
But the council has taken their needs into account.
“At Lower Gannons Park, works will involve the construction of a new amenities building,” Mr Rayner said.
“Included in the new amenities building at Lower Gannons Park will be a new storage area for dog clubs that use the park,” he added.
“The new amenities will be modern and accessible for all members of the community, including those with disabilities.
“Council has placed a strong emphasis on improving public amenities throughout the local government area and has especially focused on improving accessibility for everyone,” he added.
Works are expected to be completed in late 2017.
