An apartment building in Sutherland’s President Avenue has been shortlisted for the Aaron Bolot NSW Architectural Award in the cateorgy of Residential Architecture – Multiple Housing.
Candelapas Associates designed the building and Sutherland Shire building company, Cuzeno Builders and Developers built it.
The Design Architect, Angelo Candelapas, said: “This building is in such a great location with its proximity to trains and transport, yet it’s at the foothold of the National Park.
“Everything that’s been placed in that building has been placed for a reason.’’
He said the depth of the building’s facade allows people a sense of privacy and, unlike many other developers, he intentionally left the interiors as neutral as possible.
There are 49 apartments in the building and the majority of these were sold off the plan two years prior to the building being completed.
Aaron Murray bought one of the two-bedroom apartments and he said he’s been very with his purchase.
Mr Murray, who works in the architectural industry as a Senior Designer at Hill Thalis Architecture and Urban Projects in Surry Hills, said he knew this building would be unusual and sought-after.
“We knew the architect and that was one of the things that drew us to the building,” he said Murray.
“I was drawn to the useable space and the very appealing planning.
“We bought off the plan. We signed the contract in February of 2015 and moved in by November of 2016 so we were waiting close to two years.
“Living in an apartment like this is different from living in other apartments.
“There’s a sense of space and you’re not looking at your neighbours. The building has great design and good bones. It’s different from everything else and it’s in a fantastic area – Sutherland is a great area to live in.”
Mr Murray’s apartment has both north and south-facing aspects and so there’s is a lot of cross ventilation and air flow.
“It exceeds the requirement for ventilation under the regulations,” he said.
“Plus it’s a lot bigger than most apartments.”
“The large open space for the living area allows a lot of flexibility and it’s all useable space.
There are no long corridors – it’s comfortable living. I’m living in an apartment building but I still have the privacy of a home. It feels more secure, like you’re not on display.”
Mr Murray said there’s a large balcony on the north facing side which is great for outdoor living and because of its design, doesn’t attract a lot of noise.
From a record field of more than 200 entries, 17 jurors selected 88 projects in 12 categories for this year’s shortlist for the 2017 NSW Architecture Awards.
NSW chapter president Andrew Nimmo said this year’s shortlist “displays the important and varied contributions architects make to our environment and quality of everyday life.”
The winners of each category will be announced at the 2017 NSW Architecture Awards presentation evening on Saturday, July 1, at Luna Park in Milsons Point, Sydney.
Winners of the 2017 NSW Named Awards and Architecture Awards will progress to the National Architecture Awards to be announced in November 2017.
