It’s the most visited area in Royal National Park, but facilities at Wattamolla are less than impressive.
That will change following funding in the state budget to upgrade amenities and create a new camping ground.
The budget provided $3.9 million for the visitor precinct upgrade and for work on the Coast Track between Wattamolla and Garie.
Work will start after the Wattamolla master plan is finalised, which is expected to be before the end of this year.
A spokeswoman for the Office of Environment and Heritage said Wattamolla was the most visited destination in Royal National Park.
“The upgraded facilities will make an important contribution to providing a better and safer visitor experience for an increasing number of visitors,” she said.
The spokeswoman said it was proposed to upgrade toilet blocks adjacent to the main parking area, as well as the entrance turnaround and bus drop off zone.
“The proposed location of the camp ground is in the open area located adjacent to the existing Wattamolla car park and near the vicinity of the public amenities buildings,” she said.
“The final location and configuration of any camp ground will be determined during the detailed design phase of the project.”
