Motorists will be banned from turning left into Cronulla Street at the southern end of Cronulla mall from Tuesday, July 25.
The ban will be in place during a six months trial after which a decision will be made on whether the change should be made permanent.
Sutherland Shire Council accepted the recommendation of the Traffic and Traffic Safety Committee to ease the bottleneck near the train station.
“The ‘No Left Turn’ restriction will be displayed on electronic message boards prior to and during the trial along roads leading to the intersection, advising motorists of the changed traffic conditions,” a council spokesman said.
“The situation will be monitored during this six month trial period before a final report is presented to the Traffic Safety Committee for consideration.
“Further information for the community will be available on council’s website from July 5.”
South-bound vehicles will still be able to make a right turn into Cronulla Street by doing a U-turn at the Laycock Avenue roundabout.
However, traffic studies suggest a significant percentage of motorists will not undertake this detour because it is inconvenient.
The studies found more than 60 per cent of motorists who, at present, enter the one way section of Cronulla Street do not find an available parking space.
