Rockdale will lose dozens of car spaces when the Chapel Street car park closes next month.
The car park is part of a land parcel that was sold in 2014 in a multi-million dollar deal.
It consists of three council car parks and five residences.
It has sat largely untouched since then however, eagle eyed residents say a sign went up last week confirming the car park will be closing on August 10.
That was worried Kyeemagh resident Julia Gennissen.
She regularly parks in the car park because of an injury that doesn’t allow her to get on the bus.
‘’I use the car park most days and nine times out of 10, it’s packed,’’ she said.
‘’It’s full every time I go there and it’s a bit of a worry about what will happen when it closes.’’
When the land was sold the council said the spaces would be replaced with 360 spots in the multi-level car park in York Street and the developer would be obliged to provide 40 in the Chapel Street area.
A parking survey completed in June and October 2015 that found there were currently 600 on street car spaces and 849 off street car spaces.
The survey found that supply exceeds the current demand of 1233 car spaces as well as predicted demand in 2025 of 1346 car spaces.
An updated project report presented at the August 2016 council meeting showed no changes.
A Bayside Council spokesman said the new development would provide more parking than the 40 required.
‘’The completed development will have 93 car spaces accessible to the public made up of street, basement and commercial parking,’’ he said.
‘’This number exceeds the Rockdale Town Centre Masterplan which only required 40 spaces in this location.’’
He said the new streetscape would make it a people-friendly open space that would provide improved amenities.
Do you think there is enough parking in Rockdale?
