Georges River Sailing Club has played host to a number of NSW-based crews in preparation for the Tasar World Championships in Japan.
The Japanese regatta attracts a top class international fleet with more than 90 entries in age categories ranging from juniors to super grandmasters.
The six contending NSW boats have made the most of winter time training at the Georges River facilities on Botany Bay.
The elite field of sailors from around the world includes former national and world champions in both Tasars and other classes as well as Olympic bronze, silver and gold medalists.
NSW Tasar publicity officer and GRSC sailor Jenny Sorensen said her club’s contingent were looking forward to the competition.
“So far winter has provided sensational sailing conditions on the bay with light to moderate breezes and sunny skies, similar to what we expect over in Japan,” she said.
“While the competition is going to be piping hot there is enthusiasm by all to sail their divisional best within their age categories and of course to enjoy Japan’s traditional style of hospitality and social activities.”
Sorensen, from Kogarah, will be joined by fellow GRSC sailors Gary and Robyn Ratcliffe (Peakhurst Heights) and Wollongong’s Bernie Streater in Japan.
Competition at the 21st Tasar World Championships starts on July 30, finishing on August 6.
