Motorists are getting a faster run around Sydney Airport following the opening of a third westbound lane on Marsh Street, Arncliffe.
Roads, Maritime and Freight Minister Melinda Pavey said improved travel times of five to 10 minutes were expected.
The extra lane, between Giovanni Brunetti Bridge and the M5 on- ramp, is part of the $38 million Airport West Precinct Project, which aims to ease congestion around the airport and Port Botany precinct.
“The new lane will remove a significant pinch point for the 56,000 motorists who use Marsh Street daily, including about 27,000 who travel towards the western suburbs,” Ms Pavey said.
Work on the Marsh Street project will continue, with construction of a new central median, traffic light upgrades at the intersection of Marsh Street and Flora Street and pedestrian and cyclist paths on the northern and southern sides of the road.
“Crews will be working up to five nights a week for 60 shifts until the end of September to complete the project,” Ms Pavey said.
