It wasn’t just the race winners who enjoyed themselves on Sunday, with plenty of good stories from the community coming out of this year’s PAYCE Sutherland 2 Surf.
Almost 6,000 competitors took on the race this year on a perfect winter morning.
Gymea Technology High School principal Peter Marsh, who fought a battle with cancer last year, set himself the challenge to be fit enough to run the Sutherland 2 Surf this year.
His aim was to raise awareness and money for the Cancer Council who support many others suffering from the disease. His fundraising efforts have raised more than $4000 so far, with Mr Marsh the highest individual fundraiser in this year's race.
Fundraising efforts started three weeks before the race with Gymea's Biggest Morning Tea. $1800 was raised through a competition 'Bake-off' where staff and students baked and brought into school their favourite morning tea recipe that was judged by a mystery panel.
Cancer Council NSW regional administrator Hayley Hornitski contacted Mr Marsh to congratulate him on his efforts.

Meanwhile, John Beattie celebrated his 70th birthday last week and competed in his 31st Sutherland 2 Surf. Mr Beattie ran with his daughter, Nadene, son Chad and grandson, Mason.
Also, a walking group of shire mums who call themselves the Short and Stout walking group, or “the Stouters”, took on the 11-kilometre journey together in matching outfits.
